Dr. Seuss's classic 1954 book Horton Hears a Who has entertained generations of children and served as the inspiration for a 26-minute, 1970 television special Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who and the 2000 Broadway musical Seussical: The Musical. This 2008, full-length animated movie features the voice talents of Jim Carrey as Horton, Steve Carrell as the Mayor of Whoville, Carol Burnett as the Kangaroo, and Jesse McCartney as JoJo and promises to delight a whole new generation of children and their parents and grandparents. The technological wonders of computer animation have allowed 20th Century Fox Animation to bring to life the wacky, colorful Whoville with its minute inhabitants and the lush Jungle of Nool with its host of distinctive animals and the result is a rich, fantastical world of wonder worthy of Dr. Seuss' own imagination. All the major plot elements of Dr. Seuss' book are present, with Horton hearing the faint cry for help from a tiny dust speck atop a small clover and doing his best to protect the inhabitants of that small civilization of Whoville despite the disbelief, disdain, and persecution of his fellow animals. The feel of Dr. Seuss' original rhyming prose is partially preserved in the sparse narration by Charles Osgood that's interspersed throughout the film's dialogue and the overarching themes of staying true to one's convictions and the celebration of the power of perseverance, imagination, and kindness come through loud and clear. Horton Hears a Who is a fun rendering of a classic Dr. Seuss story that's sure to entertain viewers of all ages. --Tami Horiuchi

not very exciting
I did not find this film very captivating, infact I fell asleep in the middle. I think a child would find it a bit slow moving.

DVD's at Buyadvd
I was so excited about reserving this DVD "Horton Hears A Who",,,The movie is perfect... a five star....I heard it would be hard to find at Christmas time..but then when it hit the stands...I could have purchased it at Walmart for $5.00 less. By the time shipping and handling was added it came to almost $26.00. Walmart price $19.98 ($21.00 or so)and just down the street...Lots of copies to buy. I was very disappointed. In this financial crisis..every penny counts.

Very good movie, minus * for a double-sided disc
This is a good movie, and a pretty good adaptation of a Seuss classic. I definitely prefer it to the live-action Grinch of a few years back. Jim Carrey seems to have restrained himself a bit, which was a definite plus in my book - I could watch this movie without being so aware that Hey, Jim Carrey's doing Horton's voice.

However, the one thing I wish I'd known before receiving this is that the Single-Disc Edition is also a double-sided disc. I'm not sure why it had to be a double-sided disc, since the movie's not that long. But double-sided discs are a peeve of mine - they're easier to damage, easier to fingerprint, and no matter what I do, I seem to always get the wrong side down on the first try.

The Best of The Seuss Adaptations
Of Course as Everyone Knows There Were 2 Other Seuss Movies, and in my Opinion This is The Best of Them. The CGI Animation is Somewhat Sussian. Jin Carrey and Steve Carell are Great as The Lead Voices in The Film. A Good Family Film.

The Special Features Include an Entertaining Dirctors Commentary, Alot of Great Deleted Scenes, an Intertaining Animation Screen Test Feature, Very Entertaining Feature on The Charecters, an Interesting Feature on Animating Horton, an Interesting Meet Katie Feature, an Interesting Bringing Seuss to The Big Screen, an Interesting Feature on Jim Carrey as Horton, a Good Feature on A Person is a Person, a Great Feature on Were Do We Fit in, a Great Featuatte on Real Life Elephants, and a DVD Game (Titled ''We Are There'', and it's a Remembering Game) That's Too Easy.

Weird, Silly and Fun
As much as I enjoyed The Grinch live-action film, I have to say I am even more impressed with Horton Hears a Who. This film really captures the look and feel of Dr. Seuss' charming children's books. "Horton Hears a Who" is about an elephant named Horton who, one day, happens to hear a tiny voice on a tiny speck. Within a short amount of time, he realizes that that tiny speck contains an entire world of the people called "Whos", who happen to be in dire need of protection. Unfortunately, not everyone has the ears to hear a Who, and soon the least kind among them (an authoritative kangaroo voiced by Carol Burnett) stirs up the rabble and everyone turns against him.
Colorful and crazy, this animation brings Seuss' drawings to life. Jim Carrey does a wonderful job of making Horton both silly and sincere, playful and touching as he goes against the grain of belief to hold onto a truth that only he knows.
Sounds pretty deep for a family film--in fact sometimes the friction provided by Carol Burnett's character can get rather heavy-handed. But it all works out in the end, and it is Horton's compassion towards those who would harm him that brings the message home. Simultaneously fighting this same battle is Steve Carell's character, the Mayor of Who-ville and the only one who knows about Horton. The chemistry between these two comedic talents brings their shared situation into an enjoyable, wacky ride to the finish.
The two-disc edition of this DVD (this product) contains a disc of the movie, with many bonus features: deleted scenes are organized into three categories of completion, and show you everything from rough storyboards to semi-finished products. There is also a goofy short film set in the Ice Age world, with Sid the Sloth and Scrat the Squirrel. Plus many behind-the-scenes extras about Horton Hears a Who: an interview with Jim Carrey, shorts on how the film was made, and bits and pieces of Seussian background.
The second disc contains a digital copy of the film, which means a file that you can copy and unlock on a computer or any portable device that can play the movie back (provided the device can play Windows Media Player or iTunes files).
For anyone with children, this movie will appeal on all levels. It does a nice job of avoiding crude humor and it portrays wacky, silly slapstick in a delightful way. Very small children might be distressed near the end, but ultimately it all ends sweetly, and I suspect they'll be asking you, "Can we watch it again?"
