Great DVR with no monthly fees |
I've had the Philips DVR for a few weeks now, and I am very happy with it. It comes with standard a/v cables that give an okay image. Once it was hooked up with a HDMI cable (nice, cheap one through Buyadvd), the picture was great, both for standard and digital cable (yes, it will record digital channels) and the upscaling of standard DVDs. It is easy to set-up, and programming the timer is very intuitive, with multiple recording quality settings (nicely compared in the manual) and chaptering settings (in the setup screen). Additionally, the quick start and full manual are very well organized and easy to understand for those who need them. It allows you to pause live TV, as well, and includes good on-screen instruction for using it. When watching recorded shows, you can skip forward or back 30 sec to 1 minute (determined through the setup). Shows copied to the hard disk can be edited and burned to DVD; I haven't tried this yet. You can also record shows directly to a DVD or DVD RW. Lastly, it has front inputs for USB and i.link, nicely hidden behind a panel.
There are just a few minor things keeping it from receiving a 5-star rating. First, no HDMI cable included (most electronics don't include this; I suspect a conspiracy with certain companies charging $100 for 6 feet of cable... but I digress). Second, when it is recording to the hard drive, it has a bright blue LED that is a bit distracting on its face. Third, while recording, it will only show the channel it is recording on. This could be a problem if you are using it for a TV tuner; I just switch from the HDMI input to TV. None of these are deal-breakers, just little annoyances.
I have no regrets getting this over a TiVo, and it is definitely better than what the cable companies offer. |

Phillips DVDR3576H/37 HDD & DVD Player |
I bought the Phillips digital recording unit because I receive my television through a roof antenna, and my VCR won't work after February 2009.
It took me awhile to get it to talk to my Mitsubishi TV (Mitsubishi has some strange settings, but a great HD picture). After that, it was pretty easy to set-up. I just recorded my first television show in digital, and the playback is great.
I'm still learning to work the unit, and I have not had to call customer service yet, but its been great so far.

Great product |
We receive all of our TV over the air (from an antenna). This product gives us TIVO like functionality without any monthly fees.
We can store TV shows (both analog and digital) to disk for future viewing and use the instant tape to pause a live show.

Beautiful and Intuitive Machine |
|
Purchased this machine to replace a failed Panasonic..VCR/DVD with a tuner. This new machine is in a whole different class. The 160gb drive is much like a Tivo machine.. Setup, programming and dubbing are all very straightforward and work smoothly. Tuner is equally as good or in some case better than the Sharp Aquious LCD TV it is hooked to. Even at the low quality speed the picture is very acceptable even at 720p..Recording at the highest quality ..it is flawless.. Editing and dubbing to the DVD drawer is easy with good results. One of the nice features is the remote.. nicely laid out and easy to use. This is a lot a machine for the buck.. Smooth performer and excellent value.. These folks get it right. Cudos ! |

Excellent System |
I purchased this unit for my father as a replacement for his VCR. He is 77 years old and needed something simple to operate. This unit was an excellent choice. It was very easy to setup and easy for him to learn to use.
I have only two minor complaints.
My first complaint was that the unit would not let you use high speed dubbing to DVD if you use a different recording format than you originally used to record the program to the hard drive. We recorded a two-hour program in HQ mode. Since HQ mode only allows 60 minutes of recording to a DVD, we had to use a different recording mode (SP). Therefore, the unit required us to record to DVD in real-time (taking two hours of recording time) instead of high-speed dubbing (which would only have taken about 10-15 minutes). Now we know and generally record long programs in a mode that will allow high-speed dubbing to DVD.
The second complaint is that the buttons on teh remote control are very small and the labels are hard for my father to read.
I am very happy with the purchase and have considered getting one for myself. |
